The Pain Bubble Zip Hoodie plays with the collision of military utility, traditional craft, and a joke that gets lost in translation. Cut in a cropped silhouette, the hoodie replaces traditional ribbing at the waist with an unexpected bubbled hem, giving the familiar zip-up a rounded, exaggerated shape. Four metal lighter flame guards on the front pocket add a piece of improvised hardware inspired by vintage crust punk garments.
The centerpiece is a panel of traditional filet embroidery, made from 100% cotton netting, hand embroidered by artisans in India, and trimmed in lace. Based on extant vintage examples, the panel reads “PAIN” the French word for bread. Removed from its original context, the word takes on a very different meaning in English.
Set against a collection informed by vintage military uniforms and masculine utility, the delicacy of the traditionally feminine needlework creates an intentional contradiction.
